Am I Ready for A Relationship or Should I Take More Time Alone

Home Relationships Am I Ready for A Relationship or Should I Take More Time Alone

Deciding whether or not to start a new relationship can be an exciting but confusing time. It is important to figure out if you are truly ready for a relationship, or if you could benefit by spending some time focusing on yourself.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. Do I feel strongly about myself and about my own identity?
  2. Do I get my sense of self from people that I date?
  3. Do I know how to be a healthy and emotionally intelligent partner?
  4. Do I have other things going on in my life that are fulfilling and rewarding or do I spend my life around my dating partner?
  5. Is there anything that I am afraid of or avoiding?
  6. Do I have any behaviors that are out of control (drinking, shopping, work, etc.)?
  7. Do I know what I want to get out of dating?
  8. Do I know how to be open and direct about my needs with my partner?

Asking yourself these questions can help you evaluate your readiness and what you want to get out of a new relationship. For example, if you have things in your life you’re afraid of or avoiding, are you just jumping into a relationship because it gives you a place to hide and something else to focus on? Or if you have behaviors that are out of control, can you acknowledge that without working on those issues, you will be unable to create a healthy relationship with someone else? If you find yourself answering the above questions in a way that gives you pause, it may be beneficial to think about how you can address those questions before starting a new relationship.

Spending time with yourself can be a little intimidating at first, especially if there are issues that you have been avoiding. But the good news is that you don’t have to do that work alone. Finding a mental health professional or enrolling in a program for young adults can give you the time and tools you need to begin addressing aspects of your life you’d like to improve before entering a relationship. By spending time with yourself, you are giving yourself the gift of your full attention. Something you deserve. We often get distracted by life and responsibilities and we don’t take the time to focus on what we truly need. Especially when it comes to relationships. Rather than getting swept up in the excitement of the possibility of a new relationship, instead, take a step back and discover what it is you really need.

Foundations Asheville for Young Adults

The young adults served by Foundations Asheville come to the program with a wide variety of experience and a myriad of goals but are interested in actively working toward a greater degree of independence in their daily lives.

Our team partners with young adults to establish viable goals. Then, we work side-by-side with each individual to support and encourage the realization of those goals. Along with personal growth through group sessions, we also help our students to develop personal skills such as cooking, nutrition, fitness, gardening, and financial management so that they can live well-balanced lives.
