Gap Year Program for Young adults

Foundations Asheville: A Gap Year for Growth

Early young adulthood can be filled with possibility, and also life pressure – to embark on a future that you may not see clearly or be ready for.

So…

If you could put your unique development in an incubator to accelerate your growth and readiness for the world, would you?

At Foundations Asheville, we help gap year students start fresh and step forward with clarity and self-confidence. In our life skills environment, young adults ages 18–25 learn to work with our team to illuminate their unique path, live independently, build meaningful routines, and rediscover motivation.

Why Take a Gap Year?

A gap year isn’t about “time off.”

It’s about time well spent.

Students at Foundations use this season to explore passions, strengthen life skills, and experience authentic independence. They learn how to balance structure with freedom, accountability with flexibility, and support with self-reliance.

Whether they’re preparing for college, testing out a career path, or simply rebuilding confidence after a challenging transition, students discover what motivates them — and how to build a life around it.

This is a gap year with purpose: guided self-discovery, not drifting.

What Makes Foundations Asheville Different?

Foundations Asheville bridges the best of both worlds — the adventure of a gap year program and the structure of a transitional living community.

Our students don’t just take classes or go on trips; they build the skills that make adult life work. From budgeting and cooking to social connection and stress management, everything we do is designed to foster growth, confidence, and self-direction.

We offer three progressive stages of support, tailored to each young adult’s level of independence:

  1. Residential Stage: Mentor-supported homes with daily guidance and structured independence.
  2. Transitional Stage: Student-run housing that emphasizes self-management, problem solving, and teamwork.
  3. Independent Living: Foundations or personal apartments with continued access to student center resources, groups, and coaching.

Every student’s journey is unique. We meet them where they are — then help them move forward with confidence.

Asheville, North Carolina, is our classroom — a vibrant city surrounded by mountains, music, and opportunity. Students volunteer, work, study, and explore. Every week includes adventure outings, local events, and more than 30 structured activities to choose from.

For Parents: A Foundation for the Future

Parents often worry that taking a gap year for young adults might slow progress. In reality, the right program can accelerate it.

Foundations Asheville is designed for kind, low-risk young adults who may be struggling with executive functioning, anxiety, or a lack of direction. Many arrive uncertain. They leave motivated, capable, and confident.

Our team of clinicians, educators, and mentors provides individualized guidance, therapy, and family support. Weekly parent coaching calls help you stay connected while allowing your young adult the space to grow independently.

The result? A stronger sense of self. Renewed confidence. Practical life skills. And a young adult ready to launch — not just into college or work, but into adulthood itself.

A Day in the Life

A day at Foundations is both structured and flexible, balancing productivity and exploration. Mornings might start with a workout, a study session, or a college class at AB Tech. Afternoons bring life-skills coaching, volunteering, or outdoor adventure. Evenings might include cooking dinner with housemates, attending a therapy group, or exploring Asheville’s downtown scene.

No two days are the same — because no two students are. But all follow the same rhythm: purpose, community, growth.
