Putting Yourself First: Building a Healthy Mind and Body

Self-care has become a buzz phrase with many influencers in the media touting the benefits. When we talk about self-care, many people immediately think of spa days and bubble baths, but the reality is that self-care can actually be much simpler and much more accessible. Taking care of your mental and physical health is an important part of overall wellness for all young adults.

Mental and Physical Health

Mental and physical health is the product of the social, economic, and environmental conditions in which we live. Our minds and bodies are shaped by a wide array of factors. For example, many people aren’t taught to pay attention to our mental health. We believe that everything is supposed to be OK, so we act as if everything is OK, even (or especially) when it’s not. We ignore negative feelings in favor of what we believe we are “supposed” to feel. On the physical side, we know that our bodies need eight hours of sleep to function well, but you can have convinced yourself that six hours is enough, even when you feel fatigued or brain fog.

Implementing Self Care

One way to improve your self-care is by scheduling it into your day. Studies have shown that even a 30-minute walk can boost your physical and mental health. Between work, school, friends, and family, life can get very busy, very quickly. If you do not put aside time for your health, chances are you won’t make time for it when other obligations are piling up. It is important to understand that taking this time for yourself is not selfish, but a way to make sure that your needs are being met. There is a common phrase: “You can’t pour from an empty cup”. This is the idea behind prioritizing your mental and physical health. Self-care makes us more available and open to others and we have more to give when we’re not exhausted, sleep-deprived, or overwhelmed.

Self-care is not an over the top indulgence, but rather an ongoing, daily practice. Small actions can have positive effects on your mental and physical health. For example, when you’re tired, take a break. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, talk with someone you trust or a mental health professional. It is the practice of listening to your mental and physical needs and learning how to address them before you end up in a place of deficit. Taking care of yourself is crucial to everyone, and it is something we can all learn to do.
